World Ocean Day is an international day that takes place annually on 8 June.

World Oceans Day serves as a reminder of the oceans' vital role in our planet's ecosystem. Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface and are crucial for regulating the climate, providing food and oxygen, and supporting a diverse range of marine life.

Theme

The theme for this year's World Oceans Day is – Awaken New Depths. The action theme for this year is - Catalysing action for our ocean and climate.

History 

The initiative was first proposed at the 1992 Earth Summit, which was marked by several landmark agreements on the environment, from climate change to ocean management. The day is officially recognised by the United Nations and supports its Sustainable Development Goals.
