Days after Eknath Shinde took over as the chief minister and the BJP returned to power in the state, first-time BJP legislator Rahul Narwekar was elected as the Maharashtra Assembly Speaker on Sunday.

• The Bharatiya Janata Party candidate received a total of 164 votes in support and 107 against him. 
• The first-time MLA, in the past, has been associated with Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party before joining the BJP before the 2019 assembly elections.
• He was elected as the speaker, a year after the post was vacant after the resignation of Nana Patole who stepped down to become Maharashtra Congress president.
