As mentioned under Article 243U of the Constitution of India under Part IX-A, elections to the Municipalities must be conducted before the completion of its tenure. This provision has been categorically mentioned in the Constitution to ensure timely conduct of elections to the local bodies and to prevent them to exceed the tenure which was a bane before local bodies were granted constitutional status.
