Algeria, Guyana, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone and Slovenia were elected non-permanent members of the UN Security Council on Tuesday( 6 June 2023) for a two-year term.

• The five newly elected countries will join Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland as non-permanent members of the Council
• The newly elected members will take up their new responsibilities on January 1, 2024 and serve till December 31, 2025.

About Un Security Council

The Security Council is composed of 15 countries, five of which - China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – are permanent members, granting them the right to veto any resolution or decision. The 10 non-permanent members are elected by the General Assembly, which comprises all 193 UN Member States, and in line with geographical distribution by region.

The Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister's Learn and Earn scheme - will be launched to teach employable skills to the youth. In the scheme, 703 work areas have been identified for training.

• The most important aspect of this learn-and-earn scheme is that along with learning skills, the youth will also be given an allowance of Rs 8,000 to 10,000.
• Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said that the government is making continuous efforts to connect the youth with employment.
• At least one lakh youth will be provided training under the scheme. As per the schedule, the registration of establishments providing training to youth will start from today and the registration of youth willing to learn work will start from 15th June. The youth will start working from 1st August.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between NHPC Limited and Maharashtra government for the development of pumped storage schemes and other renewable energy projects in the state. 

• It envisages the development of four pumped storage projects with a total capacity of 7,350 MW.
• These projects will attract an investment of about Rs. 44,000 crores and will generate indirect and direct employment for 7,000 people in the state, said NHPC CMD RK Vishnoi.
• Pumped storage systems utilise surplus power from thermal power stations or other sources to pump up water from the lower to the upper reservoir and reproduce power when there is a scarcity of power.

The Bank of Baroda (BoB) has come up with a unique scheme where one can withdraw money from an ATM machine through their UPI. The facility, known as interoperable cardless cash withdrawal (ICCW), allows an account holder to withdraw money from an ATM machine without using their ATM cards. 

• On selecting the option 'UPI Cash Withdrawal' at a Bank of Baroda ATM, the customer needs to enter the withdrawal amount, post which a QR code is displayed on the ATM screen.
• Explaining the process, the lender said the customer will scan the QR code using a UPI app enabled for ICCW and then authorise the transaction with her/his UPI PIN on the mobile phone to withdraw the cash from the ATM. 
• If multiple bank accounts are linked to a single UPI ID, ICCW functionality gives customers the option to select the account to be debited. 
• Customers can avail two transactions a day per account with a withdrawal limit of Rs 5,000 per transaction.

The Tata group signed an outline deal with the Gujarat government on Friday on building a lithium-ion cell factory with an investment of about Rs 13,000 crore ($1.6 billion). The move comes as India is looking to create its own electric vehicle (EV) supply chain.

• According to sources close to the development, the decision to set up the EV battery plant at Sanand, Gujarat, was taken earlier this week at a Tata Sons board meeting.
• Tata Motors already has a plant operational at Sanand, and has also acquired the adjoining Ford Motors’ plant. The process of integration of the two plants has begun and may take up to one year to complete.

The Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government on 5 June officially launched the Kerala Fibre Optical Network (KFON), which is one of its flagship projects envisaged during the first term.

• The Kerala government, is the first state to declare the right to the internet as a basic right.
• The Govt is mulling to decrease the digital divide with KFON and want to ensure high-speed broadband internet access to all houses and government offices.

About KFON

KFON is an optical fibre cable network of 30,000 km, with 375 Points-of-Presence across the state. Along with the cable operators, the KFON infrastructure will be shared with all service providers. However, individual beneficiaries will have to depend on private, local internet service providers, while others will do the cable work for government offices. The government has said that KFON will be provided by local ISP/TSP/cable TV providers.

World Food Safety Day is celebrated on June 7 every year to draw attention and inspire action to help and manage foodborne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development.

• The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) jointly facilitate the observance of World Food Safety Day, in collaboration with Member States and other relevant organizations. 
• The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) together designated this day in 2018. The first observance of World Food Safety Day took place on June 7, 2019, with the theme "Food Safety, Everyone's Business." 
• World Food Safety Day theme 2023 is “Food Standards Save Lives”.

In Jammu and Kashmir, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today laid the foundation stone of ONGC National Disaster Mitigation Centre & Yatri Niwas in Jammu.
 
Union Minister and LG performed Puja for the commencement of construction work for Yatri Niwas & Disaster Management Center under CSR initiative of ONGC.

• Union Minister said the Yatri Niwas will help in providing accommodation for 30,000 Amarnath pilgrims every year & will be particularly helpful for yatris from weaker sections. Will help in traffic management & ensure a seamless experience.
• This new facility will ease the lives of devotees embarking on annual pilgrimage of Baba Amarnath.
• The LG also inaugurated Prasad cum Souvenir Counter of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board in the departure area of Jammu Airport for making packaged Prasad and other Souvenir available to the devotees.
