Rabindranath Tagore was not critical of element of western civilization in Education.  In many senses Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi thought about education in similar ways. There were,  however, differences too. Gandhiji was highly critical of Western civilisation and its worship of  machines and technology. Tagore wanted to combine elements of modern western civilisation with what he saw as the best within Indian tradition. He emphasised the need to teach science and  technology at Santiniketan, along with art, music and dance. The first cotton mill in India was set up  as a spinning mill in Bombay in 1854. From the early nineteenth century, Bombay had grown as an  important port for the export of raw cotton from India to England and China.
