Study the information given below and answer the questions that follow:
There are an uncertain number of people standing in a row facing north. Two people stand between A and B. D stands sixth to the left of B and eighth from the extreme left end of the row. C stands fourth to the left of D. There are fve people standing between C and E. F stands to the immediate left of E. The number of people standing between F and D is same as the number of people standing between E and G. H stands seventh to the right of G and third from one of the extreme ends.
Who is third to the left of A?
B
E
H
C
D
Let’s break it down stepwise:
- D is sixth to the left of B and eighth from the extreme left. That means D is at position 8, and B is at position 14.
- Two people stand between A and B. So, A can be in position 11 or 17. Let’s keep that in mind.
- C is fourth to the left of D. So, position of C = 8?–?4 = 4.
- There are five people between C (4) and E. E can be at 10 (to the right) or at -2 (which is off the row), so E is at 10.
- F stands immediately left to E, so F is at 9.
- Number of people between F (9) and D (8) is 0.
- The same number (0) should be between E (10) and G, so G is at 11.
- H stands seventh to the right of G (11), H is at 18. Also, H is third from one of the extreme ends—so the row length is 20 in all.
- Now, remember A must have two between itself and B (A:11, B:14), so A is at 11.
- So, the row's setup from 1 to 20:
- D: 8
- C: 4
- E: 10
- F: 9
- G: 11
- A: 11
- B: 14
- H: 18
Let’s answer: Who is third to the left of A (A is at 11)? Positions: 10, 9, 8. That’s F, then D. Third to the left is D.
So,
Option 5, D
- Option 1 is B. B is actually to the right of A, not to the left.
- Option 2 is E, but E is immediately to the left of A, not third.
- Option 3 is H, who’s at position 18, far from A.
- Option 4 is C, but C is at position 4.
- Option 5, D, is correct.
What this really means is: position mapping is the key. Count lefts and rights carefully!
