On 5th April National Maritime Day is celebrated across the country annually. This day has been dedicated to maritime trade’s role in the development of the country’s economy, and also the country’s strategic location as well as the role in global trade.
In the year 1919, while India was ruled by the British, on 5th April, a ship named SS Loyalty, sailed from Mumbai to London. The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd owned this ship and this company was the biggest large-scale shipping company that was owned entirely by Indians. Hence, this event became important as the waterways along with the subcontinent of India were still under British rule.
‘Sustainable Shipping Beyond COVID-19’ is the theme for this day.
