- To code a word, sum the positions of each letter.

- MARKET = M(13) + A(1) + R(18) + K(11) + E(5) + T(20) = 68. 68 is simplified to 15, possibly by adding digits 6+8=14, then 1+4=5.

- SUBMARINE = 19 + 21 + 2 + 13 + 1 + 18 + 9 + 14 + 5 = 102 and simplified to 21 similar to above.

- Similarly, for CONVENTIONAL:

- C(3) + O(15) + N(14) + V(22) + E(5) + N(14) + T(20) + I(9) + O(15) + N(14) + A(1) + L(12) = 144.

- Simplify 144: 1+4+4=9

- Answer should be Option:1, 31 as 1-4-4=9, similar reduction led to 31
