Renuka bought some chocolates for her daughters. She put them on the table and went out for her doctor's appointment. Then Ayushi came home. She took one-third of the chocolates and went to her friend's house. Then came Sadhana. She thought that she was the first one to come home. She took one-third of the remaining chocolates and went out. At last Tanya came home. Thinking that she was the first one to arrive, she took one-third of the remaining chocolates. When Renuka came back, she found 24 chocolates lying on the table. She distributed them among her daughters, ensuring everyone got an equal share. How many chocolates did Renuka give to Sadhana in the end?
9
15
12
27
Correct option is 1: 9
Solution
There are 4 people (Ayushi, Sadhana, Tanya, Renuka) and 3 of them took one- third (1/3rd) of chocolates. So we consider the number 34 = 81. Let us assume Renuka has 81x chocolates with her in the beginning. Ayushi took one-third of the chocolates from the total no of chocolates = (81x) x 1/3 = 27x , Remaining chocolates = 81x - 27x = 54x From the remaining chocolates, Sadhana took one-third of the chocolates = (54x) x 1/3 = 18x, Remaining chocolates = 54x-18x = 36x Again from the remaining chocolates, Tanya took one-third of the chocolates = (36x) x 1/3 = 12x , Remaining chocolates 36x-12x = 24x • After coming home Renuka found 24 chocolates remaining. • Now, let x be equal to 1 unit. • Therefore, total no. of chocolates = 81x = 81 x 1 = 81 • Renuka distributed chocolates in such a way that each daughter gets an equal no of chocolates. • This implies that each of the 3 daughters should get 27 chocolates in the end. • Sadhana took 18 chocolates at the beginning and for the equal share, Renuka gave her 9 more chocolates at the end. (18 + 9 = 27) Hence, 9 is the correct answer.
