The monthly incomes of Ravi and Shiv are in the ratio 1 : 2 and their monthly expenditures are in the ratio 1 : 3. If each saves
Rs4,000 per month, then find the monthly income of Shiv.
Rs16,000
Rs18,000
Rs14,000
Rs20,000
- Let Ravi's income be Rs x. Then Shiv's income is Rs 2x.
- Ravi's expenditure is Rs y. So Shiv's expenditure is Rs 3y.
- Both save Rs 4000 each. So:
- For Ravi: x - y = 4000
- For Shiv: 2x - 3y = 4000
- Solve these equations:
- From Ravi: x - y = 4000 (1)
- From Shiv: 2x - 3y = 4000 (2)
- Multiply equation (1) by 2: 2x - 2y = 8000
- Subtract from (2): (2x - 3y) - (2x - 2y) = 4000 - 8000 ? -y = -4000 ? y = 4000
- Substitute y in (1): x - 4000 = 4000 ? x = 8000
- Shiv's income = 2x = 2 × 8000 = Rs 16,000
Option 1: Rs 16,000 is correct.
