• Shri V. K. Singh, Director (Projects) and Shri Daljeet Singh Khatri, Executive Director (Finance) received the award on behalf of REC in a glittering ceremony held in London on 17th October 2023.
• The Golden Peacock Awards, established by the Institute of Directors (IOD), India in 1991, has emerged as an internationally acclaimed standard for Corporate Excellence. This recognition underscores REC's commitment to excellence, innovation, and best practices in risk management of its operations in power sector.
• REC Limited was selected by the jury panel headed by Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah, the former Chief Justice of India.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced the “Sagar se Saaransh” — Vidya Samiksha Software, a tool aimed at enhancing educational governance across its vast network of 28,000 affiliated schools.

• Antriksh Johri, Director of IT and Projects, CBSE, presenting the innovative software here today, underscored its pivotal role in strengthening administrative and decision-making capabilities. 
• The software will act as a comprehensive data repository, consolidating a broad spectrum of school-related information.
• It includes details about school infrastructure, computer resources, educational materials, sanitation facilities, exam results, training programs, and sports participation.
• The primary objective of the software is to assimilate data from diverse departments into a unified platform, providing real-time and interactive insights for informed decision-making. 
• Designed to cater to the specific needs of 28,000 schools, 12.5 lakh teachers, and a vast student population of 2.6 crore, the software empowers educational authorities to pinpoint areas that necessitate improvement within subjects and classes, facilitating prompt remedial actions. Notably, real-time data enables school authorities to address imbalances, such as teacher-student ratios.

The CA Institute has bagged a prestigious UN Award for its contribution to sustainability reporting. 

• The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India’s (ICAI) sustainability initiatives received the highest score amongst 70 initiatives received from around the world.
• ICAI for its initiative Sustainability Reporting Standards Board (SRSB) has been awarded the ISAR Honours 2023 by the UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) working group on International Standards for Accounting and Reporting (ISAR). 
• UNCTAD announced the winners of the sixth edition of ISAR Honours during the 8th World Investment Forum at Abu Dhabi on October 17.

On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar participated in the unveiling ceremony of a bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Jaishankar highlighted the symbolic importance of the event, emphasizing Gandhi's global recognition for his principles of truth, non-violence, and freedom.

• Addressing the gathering at the unveiling ceremony of the bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Dr. Jaishankar said his thoughts today are a very powerful inspiration for human dignity, societal values, spirituality, environment, sustainability, cleanliness and many other areas.
• External Affairs Minister said the unveiling of the bust is a symbolic moment for the friendship between India and Vietnam, and underlines the message of independence, self-reliance and human dignity.
• Dr. Jaishankar also met Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Nguyen Van Nen. He appreciated the contribution of Ho Chi Minh City to the India-Vietnam partnership. The External Affairs Minister is on a four-day official visit to Vietnam. 

National Police Commemoration Day is marked every year on October 21 to commemorate the police officers who have sacrificed their lives in the course of service.

• It was in 1960 that an Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories was organised to observe October 21 as the National Police Commemoration Day.
• The day is set to honour the Bravehearts who protect the citizens of the country and are responsible for the enforcement of law and order.
• Police Commemoration Day is also observed as Martyr's Day in all police forces across India.
• Both police officers and the citizens mark the Police Commemoration Day with a strong sense of patriotism. A national-level Police Commemoration Day parade has been organised since 2012 at the Police War Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi.

Dhordo, a village located in the Kutch district of Gujarat, is well-known for being the gateway to the Great Rann of Kutch.

• This is also the same village where Rann Utsav was launched back in 2005.
• Dhordo village, for all its cultural impacts, is a well-known name. Dhordo has been conferred the prestigious title of the Best Tourism Village by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
• With this, Dhordo is now one of the 70 villages from nearly 40 countries that enjoy this prestigious title.
• Dhordo received this title at the Best Tourism Village - 2023 award ceremony organised by the UNWTO at the historic city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan on October 19, 2023.

Personal computers maker HP has appointed former Apple executive Ipsita Dasgupta as managing director and senior vice president for India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lankan markets, effective 30 October.  

• She will report to David McQuarrie, HP chief commercial officer. Gurpreet Singh Brar, who was officiating as interim India MD since November last year, will move to a new role of the vice-president, innovation and growth for HP’s India market, the company said in a statement. 
• Dasgupta was senior director of marketing for Apple Services based at Apple headquarters leading global synergy marketing, external partnership marketing, consumer insights, and market and competitive intelligence for Apple’s subscription services.
• Dasgupta is a seasoned leader who brings a wealth of strategic business expertise to her new role at HP, with 24 years of international operating experience across various industries.
• Prior to Apple, Ipsita held a variety of executive positions including president of corporate strategy and incubated business at Star India, A Walt Disney Company; and Chief Commercial Officer for the South Asia and Greater China at General Electric Company.
