Consider the following statements regarding the Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar:
1. He founded the Bethune College in 1849.
2. He presented a petition to the Government of India praying to them to abolish Childhood marriage.
3. His campaign was highly successful in creating mass awareness and inculcating the idea of widow remarriage.
Which of the statements given above are incorrect ?
1 and 2 only
2 and 3 only
1 and 3 only
1, 2 and 3
Correct Option: (d) Explanation: Statement 1 is incorrect: Bethune College was founded in 1849 by John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune. Statement 2 is incorrect: Vidyasagar presented a petition to the Government of India praying to them to legitimize Widow Remarriage. Statement 3 is incorrect: Masses did not appreciate hugely the idea of widow remarriage as only 25 widow remarriage took place during 1855-60. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Vidyasagar dedicated his entire life to the cause of social reform. He was a polymath who reconstructed the modern Bengali alphabet and initiated pathbreaking reform in traditionally upper-caste Hindu society. Vidyasagar followed in the great reformist tradition of Raja Ram Mohun Roy and argued, on the basis of scriptures and old commentaries, in favor of the remarriage of widows. In 1855, Vidyasagar presented a petition to the Government of India praying that “your Honourable Council will take into early consideration the propriety of passing a law to remove all obstacles to the marriage of Hindu widows and to declare the issue of all such marriages to be legitimate”. Around only 25 widow remarriage took place between 1855-60 shows that the idea of remarriage could not fi nd enough support among the masses. One of the biggest critiques of Bengal renaissance was that it failed to abandon the class character of movement as it was led by people who belonged to upper-caste and landed –gentry.
