Mental Health Act, 2017 :

=> It is an act to provide for mental healthcare and services for persons with mental illness and to protect, promote and fulfil the rights of such persons during delivery of mental healthcare and services.

Rights of People with Mental Health issues:

1. Right to make an Advance Directive

• Patient can state on how to be treated or not to be treated for the illness during a mental health situation.

2. No Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) without anesthesia

3. Right to appoint a Nominated Representative

4. Attempt to commit suicide not an offence.Earlier Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code criminalized attempted suicide.
