Brahmin communities of Uttarakhand :
People in Uttarakhand are mainly referred to as "Pahari" which means hill person. The people are called so because of the location of Uttarakhand in the foothills of Himalayas. Garhwal and Kumaon being two important regions, these part of Uttarakhand people are also referred as Garhwali or Kumaoni. Caste wise, people in Uttarakhand can be divided into Kol-Doms, Khasi Rajput, Khasi Brahmin, Immigrant Rajput, Immigrant Brahmin and lastly people who don't believe in caste systems such as Bhotias and other such tribes.Here Bramin communities are explained below :
Bahuguna : Bahuguna is an Indian Garhwali Brahmin clan, with the same surname, found in Uttarakhand in northern India. Common variations of the surname were formed during British-India to include "Bahugun", "Bhugun", "Bhuguna", as reported by Prof. C.Bahuguna in 1967.
The original village of the Bahuguna clan is Pokhri Chalansyun situated near Srinagar Garhwal, the ancient capital of Garhwal. The Kuldevi (clan deity) of Bahugunas is Gaurja/Gaura. The main temple of the Goddess is situated in Devalgarh, which is visible from Bughani. A Chauri(a small common village temple) is located in Bughani. Many Bahugunas migrated from Bughani to different parts of Garhwal and even to Kumaon. Today, there are many more villages inhabited by Bahuguna clan.
Barthwal : Barthwal is surname, rather a sub-caste of Garhwali Brahmins. Most Barthwals are concentrated in Pauri district of Uttarakhand. The deity of Barthwals is 'Bhairav', who rides on dog. Statistically, their population totals in the thousands. The Barthwals are engaged in various occupations.
Like many sub-castes of Garhwal, it is said that they are not native to Garhwal. One version (Rahul Sankratayan's) has it that they descended from four brothers, each of which settled in a different location in Pauri district. Another version has it that they all originally belonged to a village 'Badeth' in Dwarikhal Block, near Silogi, in Bichla Dhangu 'patti' (a division of block, generally consisting of 25-50 villages). Some Barthwals also live in Udaypur Patti, village Gadmola, Gankya now known as Ganeshpur. From there, their descendants moved to nearby Khand, Balori (near Pauri town) and elsewhere with the passage of time.
Chandolas : Chandolas in Kumaon region live in several villages in Bageshwar district. Their major villages are Pokhri at Kanda near Vijaypur and Kafligair. Their ist devata is Dhauli Nag, the main temple being 1 km from Vijaypur. A yearly mela/bhandara is organized in the temple premises. Badri Datt Pandey mentions that some of them are probably descendants of Mishra brahmins, who came from Garhwal and settled in Kumaon during the reign of Rudra Chand (1568–1597). In Garhwal region Chandolas live in District Pauri Garhwal Chamoli, Dehradun.
Dabral : Dabral, is a surname found in Hindu community of Garhwali Gangari Brahmins primarily living in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state of India. Member of this community are also found in Kumaon region.According to their traditions they are the descendants of the Rishi Bharadwaja. Adherent of the Shaivism sect, they do worship Shiva as their prime deity.
Gairola : Gairola is a clan of the Garhwali people and also a surname. In an earlier period Gairolas were believed to be astrologers and Raj-Purohits.
Gangari : Gangari Brahmin also spelled Gangadi is a Garhwali Brahmin subcaste from Uttarakhand, India. Gangari Brahmins were the authenticated Brahmin castes in the then small Garhwal Kingdom. The capital of this kingdom was Chandpur Garhi and several castes of Brahmins were settled in the villages surrounding the Ganges valley. Brahmins living in these villages were known as "Gangari" Brahmins. Later the relatives of these Brahmins who joined them in Garhwal were also known as "Gangari Brahmins".
Hatwal : Hatwal is one of the 36 sub-castes of Sarola Brahmins.The Hatwals are one of the 36 sub-castes of Sarola Brahmins from Garhwal who first migrated to the hills of present-day Uttarakhand from the plains of north-western India around the 13th century.
Naudiyal : Naudiyal is a surname of North Indian Brahmans of Hill state Uttarakhand. Naudiyal were called the Brahmans of Village Naudi,Naudiyal Gaon Patti Dhaijuli, Pauri Garhwal District of Dev bhoomi Uttarakhand. Adi Gaud Bhardwaj Gotriya Naudiyals are migrated from Bhring and Rajasthan in late eighth century.
Painuli : Sometimes spelled as Painuly is a Brahmin community primarily from the Indian state of Uttarakhand.They belong to the Bharadwaja Gotra and are a member of Garhwali People. Maa Rajarajeshwari is the Kul/Isth Devi and Guru Bhairav Nath is the Kul/Isth Devata or the family deities of the Painulis.
In Garhwali language the word breaks into 'Paini' which means sharp and long, and 'Lol' means head or more specifically forehead. This group is also known as 'Lekhwar' clan because these people did all the reading/writing and accounting work for the King of Garhwal apart from being their priests.
Sarola : Sarola Brahmin, also called Saryul and Serul is a Garhwali Brahmin sub-caste from Uttarakhand, India. Sarola Brahmins were the earliest authenticated Brahmin castes in the then small Garhwal Kingdom 1200 years ago. The capital of this kingdom was Chandpur Garhi and twelve castes of Brahmins were settled in twelve villages surrounding the capital. Each of this Brahmin faction have their own Kuladevata or Kuladevi. They were settled as rajpurohits, royal astrologers, priests, cooks, gurus, and as royal advisors. Along with this they were also designated the task of cooking food on auspicious occasions and also on royal occasions by the King of Garhwal, thus named "Sarola" (Garhwali for cook).
Semwal : It is one of the thirty-six subcastes of Sarola Brahmin from Uttarakhand.They are the sole custodians and pandits of the Gangotri temple.They are a major priestly class serving as pandits or pujaris in many major shrines like Tunganath, Rudranath and Kedarnath. They fall under the category of Panch Gauda Brahmins. The Semwals primarily follow Samkhya philosophy of Hinduism which has also been seen slightly influenced by the Nath parampara.
Uniyal : Uniyal is a Garhwali Brahmin surname mostly used in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. In Yamunotri, ritual duties such as the making and distribution of prasad (Sacrament) and the supervision of pujas (ritual venerations) are performed by the Uniyal family of pujaris (priests). They are part of the four (chauthogi) sub-classes of Brahmins in Garhwal, others being Dangwal, Dobhal and Bahuguna.
Upreti : Upreti or sometimes spelled Uprety, is a Hindu surname found in the highly Esteemed community of Brahmins which are primarily living in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state of India and all over the Nepal. A few members of this community are found in Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh (mainly in Agra), Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan And other states of India too. According to their traditions they are the descendants of the Rishi Mudgala, the teacher of Lord Ganesha and the one who introduced Om in his teachings for Lord Ganesha. Adherent of Shaivism sect, they worship Shiva as their prime deity.
