Directions: In a football tournament. There are four football teams Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata each will play against each other Two times.
1. One match will be in-home and another match will be away.
2. Each team will get 2 game points when they hit a goal and they will lose 1 game point when they concede a goal.
3. A team will get 5 points in winning a game. To qualify for finals a team should get above 10 points.
Note:
(i) Team Chennai won 3 matches Mumbai won 5 matches and Delhi and Kolkata have won the remaining matches equally.
(ii) Two match between Kolkata and Delhi is drawn due to the equal number of goals.
What is the sum of table points of Kolkata and Delhi and sum of the matches were won by them both?
10 points, 2 matches
15 points , 3 matches
20 points, 4 matches
25 points ,5 matches
15 points, 4 matches
Let’s break it down:
- There are 4 teams: Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata.
- Each team plays every other team twice (home & away). So, each team plays 6 matches (3 teams × 2 games).
- Total matches: 4 teams × 3 opponents × 1 (home+away each) = 12 matches, but since every match is counted twice, it’s 6 matches per team, totaling 12 distinct matches.
- Chennai won 3, Mumbai won 5. So, 3 + 5 = 8 matches won.
- “Delhi and Kolkata have won the remaining matches equally.” Total matches won = total number of games with a winner. The rest are draws.
- 12 matches total. 2 matches between Delhi and Kolkata are draws. So, 10 matches have a winner.
- 10 – (3 Chennai + 5 Mumbai) = 2 wins left, shared 1 win each by Delhi and Kolkata.
Now let’s look at the options for points:
- To qualify for finals, a team must have above 10 points.
- Delhi & Kolkata, with only 1 win each, and two draws with each other, can’t have more than (1×5)+(2 draws)= 5+2 = 7 base points (draws don’t give 5, only win does).
Checking the options:
- Option 1: 10 points, 2 matches – 1 win each = 2 wins total. Seems right, as above.
- Option 2: 15 points, 3 matches – not possible, only 2 matches are won by them together.
- Option 3: 20 points, 4 matches – too high.
- Option 4: 25 points, 5 matches – too high.
- Option 5: 15 points, 4 matches – not matching with actual wins.
Option 1 is correct: 10 points, 2 matches.
What this really means is:
- Delhi and Kolkata each won 1 match (total 2).
- The sum of their points is 10 (5 + 5).
- The rest of the options don’t fit the scenario or the win distribution.
Hope that clears it up!
