Directions: Read the following information carefully and answer the questions given below.
Eight persons - A, B, C, D, P, Q, R and S live in a 4-storey building such as ground floor is numbered as 1 above it numbered as 2 then top floor is numbered as 4 but not necessarily in the same order. Each of the floors has two flats in it as flat-1 and flat-2. Flat-1 of floor 2 is immediately below flat-1 of floor 3 and so on. In the same way, flat-2 of floor 2 is immediately above flat-2 of floor 1 and immediately below flat 2 of floor 3 and so on. Flat-1 is to the West of flat-2
Q lives in an odd-numbered floor but not on floor number 1. Both R and B live in the same flat number. R and A live in the same floor. B does not live in flat-2. There is a gap of one floor between Q and S. Both Q and S do not live in the same flat. R lives 3 floors above B. C lives immediately below D on the same flat.
How many floors are there between R and P?
One
Two
Three
Four
None
Alright, let's break this down step by step:
- 4 floors, each with 2 flats (flat-1 to the West of flat-2), giving us 8 spots for A, B, C, D, P, Q, R, S.
- Q lives on an odd floor, but not on the 1st (so 3rd or 4th floor).
- R and A share a floor; R and B share a flat number, but B does NOT live in flat-2.
- There’s a one-floor gap between Q and S, but they don’t share a flat.
- R lives three floors above B. C lives immediately below D in the same flat.
Let’s piece it together:
- B can't be on the 3rd or 4th floor, because then R would have to be on 6th or 7th, which doesn't exist.
- So B is on the 1st floor, R on the 4th (same flat number).
- Q is on either 3rd or 4th (odd, not 1st). If he’s on 3rd, S is on 1st or 4th with a gap of one floor.
- R and A are together, so A is also on 4th, other flat (since Q and S must be on different flats).
- C and D: D must be immediately above C, same flat. So could be floors 2 and 3, or 3 and 4.
Filling it in logically, P ends up with some flexibility, but the gap between P and R depends how it’s filled.
- P could be on floor 3 (suppose), R is on floor 4.
So: how many floors between R and P? One (the 3rd to 4th is a direct jump, so zero between; but between 1st and 4th, two floors in between.)
If you work out every clue from scratch, you’ll see it all fits with TWO floors between R and P (R on 4, P on 2, or vice versa).
So, the correct option is:
- Option:2, Two
Here’s what you should keep in mind:
- “Between” means floors in the middle—count them. Four and two? Third floor’s in the middle—so two between.
- If R is on 4th, P is on 2nd, the flats fall into place neatly with the clues.
Hope that clears it up!
