An estuary is a partially enclosed, coastal water body where freshwater from rivers and streams mixes with saltwater from the ocean. Estuaries, and their surrounding lands, are places of transition from land to sea. Although influenced by the tides, they are protected from the full force of ocean waves, winds, and storms by landforms such as barrier islands or peninsulas. Statement 1 is correct: A healthy estuary supports a host of plants and animals.It stores and recycles Nutrients, traps sediment and forms a buffer between coastal catchments and the marine environment. Statement 2 is not correct: India has 14 major, 44 medium and 162 minor rivers drains into the sea through various estuaries. Major estuaries occur in the Bay of Bengal.
