Context: Recently, the Prime Minister inaugurated a series of railway infrastructure projects under the ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
Indian Railways is one of the world's busiest and oldest railway systems and dubbed the lifeline of India.
The Scheme was initiated by the Ministry of Railways to modernize and redevelop 1309 stations across India in 2023.
The primary objective is to enhance station facilities with modern infrastructure and fostering a more convenient and comfortable experience for passengers.
It underscores a commitment to bolstering India's transportation infrastructure with an allocation of over Rs 24,470 crore by the government.
Indian Railways formulates comprehensive Master Plans, integrating urban development around railway stations.
This integrated approach signifies a holistic vision aimed at fostering overall urban development centered on these pivotal transport hubs.
Dedicated spaces within stations, such as Executive Lounges and areas for small business meetings, catering to diverse passenger needs.
Widening of roads, removal of unwanted structures, well-designed signages, dedicated pedestrian pathways, parking facilities, and improved lightings are done for accessibility.
Construction of high-level platforms across all station categories (760-840 mm in height), with platforms generally extending up to 600m.
Provisions are made for essential amenities like sufficient toilets, facilities for Divyangjan, escalators, durable furniture in waiting halls, and free Wi-Fi connectivity.
Installation of foot-overbridges, elevators, parking areas for two-wheelers and cars, landscaping and horticulture initiatives, and an integrated passenger information system.
Robust power supply arrangements, and CCTV surveillance for safety.
These stations can serve as 'City Centres,' seamlessly integrating both sides of the cities.
They will boast modern passenger amenities such as roof plazas, landscaping, intermodal connectivity, improved facades, kids' play areas, kiosks, and food courts.
Their design will draw inspiration from local culture, heritage, and architecture.
It would promote environmental friendly and accessible center to Divyang individuals.
The Indian Railways served about 3.52 billion passengers and transported 1512 MT of freight in 2023.
It operates over 13,000 trains daily, connecting 7,325 stations across the nation.
