Which of the following factors directly affect the velocity and direction of wind?
1. Temperature
2. Pressure gradient
3. Frictional force
4. Coriolis force
Select the correct answer using the code given below:
1 and 3 only
2, 3 and 4 only
1, 2 and 4 only
2 and 4 only
Air in motion is called wind. The wind blows from high pressure to low pressure. The wind at the surface experiences friction. In addition, the rotation of the earth also affects the wind movement. The force exerted by the rotation of the earth is known as the Coriolis force. Thus, the horizontal winds near the earth's surface respond to the combined effect of three forces the pressure gradient force, frictional force and the Coriolis force. In addition, the gravitational force acts downward. Temperature on the other hand indirectly influences the velocity and direction of the wind. Temperature leads to heating of the earth’s surface and leads to formation of a low-pressure zone, this causes air movement resulting in wind formation.
