• In India, Shaheed Diwas is observed on many occasions. Along with 23^rd March, 30^th January, the day Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated, is also observed as Shaheed Diwas.
• On this day people across the nation pay their respect towards the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
• Inspiration is also taken from the struggle the freedom fighters faced to protect and uphold the honour of the country.
• The central, as well as the state governments, have organized several events to pay respect to leaders of the Indian struggle for independence.

History of this day

Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev joined the nation’s freedom struggle. They wanted to avenge Lala Lajpat Rai’s death. Under various charges, the three revolutionaries were arrested including the murder of John Saunders a British police officer in 1928. Their primary target was James Scott, the Superintendent of Police, who had given the order to his men to lathi-charge protesters which lead to the death of Lala Lajpat Rai.
