Each Charter Act (enacted by British Parliament) was planned for administration of British India by EIC for a period of 20 years.
Charter Act of 1833 also known as St. Helena Act.
Features of 1833, Charter Act: 1. The commercial operations of the company were closed down and it was made an administrative agency for British Indian possessions. 2. The company’s trade links with China were closed. 3. This act permitted the English to settle freely in India. 4. It legalized the British colonization of the country. 5. The company still controlled the Indian territories. 6. Governor General of Bengal became Governor General of India. 1st GG of India was Lord William Bentik.
Charter Act 1853 was last charter act, because of the revolt of 1857, after which GoI Act 1858 was enacted and EIC was abolished and power was transfered to British crown.
