International Nurses Day is observed every year on May 12th, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth annually to honor and recognize the critical role nurses play in providing health care around the world.

This day provides a platform for healthcare organizations, patients, and the public to express gratitude and acknowledge the essential services provided by nurses worldwide.

History of the day

International Nurses Day was first proposed by Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in 1953 and was first celebrated in 1965. Since 1974, the International Council of Nurses has promoted this day by producing and distributing educational and public information materials.

Theme

The theme for International Nurses Day 2024 is " Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care".
