The new element of =Gopuram‘ was encouraged in temples of South India by:
Cholas
Pallavas
Pandyas
Chalukyas
The period of the imperial Cholas (c. 850 CE - 1250 CE) in South India was an age of continuous improvement and refinement of Dravidian art and architecture. They utilised the wealth earned through their extensive conquests in building long-lasting stone temples and exquisite bronze sculptures, in an almost exclusively Hindu cultural setting. Gopuram is defined as an ornate monumental tower constructed at the entrance of the temples in Southern India.
The Gopurams are prominent features in the Dravidian style of architecture we find in the Hindu temples in Southern India. These towers are topped by the kalasam which is a bulbous stone finial. They act as gateways through the walls that are surrounding the temple complex.
