Dams and Barrages in Uttarakhand :
Uttarakhand State spreads over an area of about 5.566 Mha. It is bounded by Himalayan range in north. The population of state is over 8 million. It has hilly Bhavar and Tarai area with favorite farming climate. Due to uncertainty of rainfall pattern both in time and place this state has faced and fought many draughts. To overcome this situation the state Govt. has given priority to irrigation sector. After the Independence, the necessity of constructing water resources and hydropower project were felt by the politicians of our country and many multipurpose projects were conceived and executed. After the successful construction of Yamuna Valley Hydroelectric Project Stage-I, Maneri Bhali Hydroelectric Scheme Stage-I was constructed successfully and commissioned in 1984. The Irrigation Department has attained expertise in the last 50 years in construction and maintenance of Civil Works of Hydropower Projects, which include Ichari Dam, Chhibro-Khodri Power Houses, Dakpathar Barrage, Asan Barrage, Dhalipur-Dhakrani Power Houses, Ram Ganga Darn, Chilla Hydropower and Maneri Bhaii Stage-II Projects. After the creation of New State of Uttarakhand on November 9, 2000, Irrigation Department, Uttarakhand also constructed the Maneri Bhali Hydroelectric Project Stage-II, commissioned in Feb. 2008, and remained primarily responsible for maintenance of hydropower projects in the State up to April 2010.
Baur Dam :
The Baur Dam is an earthen embankment dam, built on Baur and Kakrala rivers in Udham Singh Nagar District of uttarakhand. River Ganga is the basin area of this dam. The dam has a maximum height of 17.98 metres and length of 9.50 Kilometres.This is an irrigation dam and water of this dam irrigates Tarai area of Uttarakhand & areas of Rampur District of U.P. The nearest cities from this dam are Nainital, Haldwani, Rudrapur and Kashipur.
Gaula Barrage :
The Gaula River is a river which originates in Uttarakhand State of India flows south past Kathgodam, Haldwani, and Shahi, finally joining the Ramganga River about 15 km (9.3 miles) northwest of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. Ramganga in turn is a tributary of the river Ganges. A barrage on this river, known as the Gaula Barrage, is located at Kathgodam. The barrage is a landmark structure of Uttarakhand Irrigation Department. It provides drinking water to Haldwani city & irrigation water for the bhabar fields.
Haripura Dam :
The Haripura Dam is an earthen embankment dam, built on Bhakhara river in Udham Singh Nagar District of uttarakhand. River Ganga is the basin area of this dam. The dam has a maximum height of 10.98 metres and length of 7.90 Kilometres.This is an irrigation dam and water of this dam irrigates Tarai area of Uttarakhand & areas of Rampur District of U.P. The nearest cities from this dam are Nainital, Haldwani, Rudrapur and Kashipur.
Kosi Barrage :
54.25m long Barrage, is constructed across river Kosi at Almora to provide Drinking Water to about 1 lac 30 thousand people of Almora City and near by Hawalbag block. The reservoir formed will have a capacity of about 0.40 million cubic metre. The Detailed Project Report for Kosi Barrage has been prepared by the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in July 2012.
Tumaria Dam :
Tumaria and Tumaria extension dam near Kashipur in Distt.- U.S.Nagar, Uttarakhand were constructed in state. In the first phase, construction of Tumaria dam was commenced in 1956-57 by a revised project cost of Rs. 210.69 lacs and finally completed 10.400 km long in the year 1961-62 by total expenditure incurred Rs. 226.96 lacs. Simultaneously 216.31 km long canal system and Dhela Barrage with Dhela Feeder (5.400Km long) were constructed. Dhela barrage at Dhela river having 09 nos of other bays and 04 nos of under sluice are designed for a discharge of 1048 cumec. This reservoir is fed by Dhela feeder with diversion of Dhela river in to this feeder.
Later stage for the purpose of extension, other dam was started as 2 Tumaria extension dam in 1960-61 by a revised project cost of Rs. 254.15 lacs and completed 10.00 Km long in the year 1969-70 by expenditure of total Rs. 225.29 lacs. Also 230.80 Km long canal system for irrigation and 4.100 km long Phika Feeder were constructed to feed this reservoir by diversion of Phika river at Phika Barrage having 07 nos. of other bays and 03 nos. under sluice that are designed for a discharge of 524cumecs . Total catchment area of Tumaria and Tumaria Ext. reservoir is 399.36 sq. km. and total reservoir capacity of both dam at full reservoir level is 151.143 Mm3.
