There are three pipes A,B and C, where A and B are inlet pipes while C is outlet pipe. Find the time taken to fill or empty the tank if A and C are opened.
Statement I: Pipes A and B are opened together can fill the tank in 24 min. while and pipe C is 50% less efficient than pipe B.
Statement II: Capacity of tank is 960 litres and rate of flow of pipe B is 24 litres/min.
Only Statement I
Combining these two Statement I and II, we get 1/A + 1/B = 1/24 => 1/A + 1/40 = 1/24 => A = 60 minutes Time taken by pipe C to fill the tank = 40/0.5 = 80 min. Required time = (60*80)/(80 – 60) = 240 minutes Both the statements are necessary.
Hence, option 1 is the correct answer.
