• A Kelvin wave is a wave in the ocean or atmosphere that balances the Earth’s Coriolis force against a topographic boundary such as a coastline, or a wave guide such as the equator.
• Kelvin waves are large scale waves, which are caused by a lack of wind flow in the Pacific Ocean.
• They were discovered by Sir William Thompson (who was later known as Lord Kelvin).

• There are two kinds of Kelvin waves – coastal and equatorial waves.
