Consider the following statements regarding the justice system under Warren Hastings :
1. European District Collectors were appointed to directly preside over both Civil and Criminal courts in each district.
2. Indian Hindu laws were interpreted for the European District Collectors by persons known as Muftis.
3. Sadar Nizamat Adalats were established in every district of Bengal Presidency as a court of appeal.
How many of the above statements are correct?
Only one
Only two
All three
None
Statement 1 is incorrect: Warren Hastings ruled as the governor general of India from 1773 to 1785. In 1772, a new system of justice was established; each district was to have two courts - a criminal court (faujdari Adalat) and a Civil Court (Diwani Adalat). European district collectors presided over civil courts, whereas criminal courts were presided over by a Qazi and a Mufti under supervision of the collectors. Statement 2 is incorrect: Muftis were jurists of the Muslim community responsible for expounding the law that the qazi would administer. In the Civil Courts, Maulavi's and Hindu pandits interpreted Indian laws for European district collectors. Statement 3 is incorrect: Under the Regulating Act of 1773, a new Supreme Court was established in Calcutta, while a court of appeal - the Sadar Nizamat Adalat, was also set up in Calcutta.
