1. Most of the worlds deserts are located in the western margins of continents in the subtropics because the prevailing winds in the tropics are tropical easterly winds. The tropical easterly winds become dry by the time they reach the western margins of the continents and so they bring no rainfall.

2. Deserts near mountains are formed when rain clouds drop their rain on one side, and the land on the other side of the mountains stays dry. For example, rain clouds sail over India and meet the Himalayas, dropping their rain on India and forming the Gobi desert on the other side of these mountain

3. If any area is located far from the source of moisture (oceans) that area experiences less rainfall because moisture carrying winds have already shed their moisture and left with little to no moisture.
