Direction: Read the following information carefully and answer the questions that follow:
Ten people - A, B, C, D, E, P, Q, R, S and T are sitting in two rows with five persons in each row, not necessarily in the same order. P, Q, R, S and T are sitting row 1 facing south and A, B, C, D and E are sitting in row 2 facing north. Each person in row one faces a person from the second row.
Two people are sitting between E and B, who is sitting to the right of E. The person who is facing E is the immediate neighbour of R. S sits third to the left of R. Two people are sitting between P and T, who is facing E. Only one person is sitting between D and C, who is not sitting at any extreme end of the row. A is the immediate neighbour of both E and C.
Who is facing C?
T
S
Q
R
P
- Let’s break this puzzle down piece by piece:
- There are two rows, each with five people. Row 1 (P, Q, R, S, T) faces south; Row 2 (A, B, C, D, E) faces north. Each person faces someone from the other row.
- E and B: Two people are between them, and B is to the right of E. That means the possible arrangement for row 2 is: E _ _ B _ or _ E _ _ B
- Person facing E: Is an immediate neighbor of R in Row 1.
- S placement: S is third to the left of R (so S _ _ _ R, from left to right if facing south).
- P and T: Two between them, and T faces E.
- D and C: Only one between D and C, and C can’t be on an end.
- A placement: A sits immediately next to both E and C.
Here’s how things roll out when you run through each statement:
- E _ _ B _ works best (this gives enough room for A and C positioning, since A is next to both E and C and C can't be on an end).
- Fill gaps: E A C D B (since D and C have only one between them and C is not at the end; plus A needs to be between E & C).
- That means in row 2: E A C D B (from left to right, facing north).
- Now, who faces C? C is the third person from the left in Row 2.
- Now align the row facing them. S must be third to the left of R in row 1: So order is S _ _ R _
- But, E is faced by T. In your arrangement, T is opposite E; hence T must be at the position facing the first seat (leftmost).
- Layout: T _ _ _ _ (facing E), and fill S to be third to left of R (which means S must be to the left of R, with two people in between). So, S T _ _ R
- Now, only P and Q left – arrange them and check all clues.
If you fill in, the match for who faces C is Q.
So, here’s the verdict:
Q is the correct person facing C. Nice work!
