The current average age of a family of five members is 24. If the present age of the youngest member in the family is 8 years,

what was the average age of the family members just before the birth of this youngest member?

- The current average age of 5 family members is 24 years.

- So, total age of all family members now = 24 × 5 = 120 years.

- The youngest member is now 8 years old.

- Before youngest was born (8 years ago), there were 4 members.

- At that time, those 4 were also 8 years younger than now, so:

Age of 4 members then = (total current age of 4 elder members) - (8 × 4)

Current age of 4 elder = 120 - 8 = 112

Total age 8 years ago = 112 - 32 = 80

- Average age then = 80 ÷ 4 = 20 years.

- Option 2 (20 years) is correct.
