Booker Prize 2021
Current GK ( Master) (Current Affairs) Awards

Context: Recently, South African playwright and novelist Damon Galgut won the 2021 Booker Prize for "The Promise", his third shortlisted novel which chronicles a family in his homeland from the late apartheid era through to Jacob Zuma's presidency.
About the Winner

  • Galgut had been British bookmakers' runaway favourite to win the 50,000-pound ($69,000) prize with his story of a troubled Afrikaner family and its broken promise to a Black employee—a tale that reflects bigger themes in South Africa's transition from apartheid.
  • Galgut took the prize on his third time as a finalist, for a book the judges called a “tour de force”.
  • He was previously shortlisted for ‘The Good Doctor’ in 2003 and ‘In a Strange Room’ in 2010, but lost both times.
  • He is the third South African novelist to win the Booker Prize, after Nadine Gordimer in 1974 and J.M. Coetzee, who won twice, in 1983 and 1999.

About Booker Prize

  • In 1997, Arundati Roy of India won the Booker Prize for her Novel “The God of Small Things”.
  • The Booker Prize carries 50,000 pounds of cash money.
  • Douglas Stuart who won the 2020 Booker Prize was the only British author on the US-dominated shortlist. Douglas was born in Glasgow.

International Booker Prize

David Diop has become the first French writer to win the International Booker Prize, as he was selected for the prestigious award in 2021.
