The Government of India has launched BIMReN (BIMSTEC-India Marine Research Network) to enable PhD students from BIMSTEC countries to conduct doctoral research in India.

BIMReN, a joint initiative of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Bay of Bengal Programme-Inter Governmental Organization (BOBP-IGO), aims to promote the sustainable development of the blue economy by networking researchers and research institutions in BIMSTEC countries.

BIMReN aims to enable PhD students from BIMSTEC countries to conduct doctoral research in India and facilitate collaborative research among scientists and academicians from BIMSTEC countries through:

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj, has retired, the senior diplomat said on Saturday.

• The first woman diplomat to occupy the prestigious position as the Ambassador of India at the UN, Kamboj, who had joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1987.
• Kamboj, who was the All India women's topper of the 1987 Civil Services batch and the topper of the 1987 Foreign Service batch, formally assumed the position of Permanent Representative/ Ambassador of India to New York, on August 2, 2022.
• Kamboj began her diplomatic journey in Paris as the Third Secretary in the Indian Embassy to France from 1989 to 1991.

The central government has approved the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Assam, to be located near Guwahati.

This development will position Guwahati among the select cities in India hosting top educational institutions, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on June 2.

IIM-Ahmedabad, as the mentor institute, has been tasked with preparing a detailed project report for the new Indian Institute of Management at Assam.

This day is celebrated annually on June 3, 2024. The United National General Assembly declared World Bicycle Day in April 2018. 

Professor Leszek Sibilski, a Polish-American social scientist and cycling advocate came up with this idea, which led his sociology class to promote the bicycle. The resolution was adopted by all the 193 member states, demonstrating global support for cycling. 

The bicycle has been around for over two centuries.

The first bicycles, the "dandy horses" were invented in the early 19th century. Since then, bicycles have evolved significantly and have become a crucial part of many people's daily lives. 

India showcased outstanding performance at the Taiwan Athletics Open 2024, concluding the campaign with an impressive medal haul of seven medals, including three golds, three silvers and one bronze.

• In the women’s Long Jump event, Nayana James secured the gold medal, achieving a remarkable jump of 6.43 meters.
• Sumire Hata from Japan secured the silver, while Yu Jeongmi from South Korea took home the bronze.
• Ankesh Choudhary from India claimed the gold in the Men’s 800 meters race, clocking 1 minute 50.63 seconds.
• His compatriot, Somnath Chouhan, secured the silver with a timing of 1 minute 50.88 seconds.
• The bronze went to Hussein Lorana from the Philippines.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that India has created a world record with 64.2 crore voters participating in the Lok Sabha Polls.

• Mr Kumar said that the number is 1.5 times of the voters of all G7 countries – US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada.
• He said, in this Lok Sabha polls, 31.2 crore women voters cast their votes which is also the highest ever in the world.
• He also said, only 39 repolling were conducted in this election unlike 540 repolling in 2019 General Election.
• Mr Kumar said, over 68 thousand monitoring teams and 1.5 crore polling and security personnel were involved in the electoral exercise.

India will host the world’s most premier aviation event, the annual general meeting (AGM) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), next year, after a gap of 42 years.

• This will be the third time the IATA  AGM considered one of the most significant events in the aviation industry’s calendar has convened in Delhi, after 1958 and 1983. 
• The chiefs and various other top executives of almost all global airlines, aircraft manufacturers, and other aviation sector stakeholders gather once a year at the IATA’s AGM to discuss issues pertaining to the global aviation sector. 
• IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, will be the host airline of the AGM and the World Air Transport Summit. 
• The summit will take place in Delhi between June 8 and 10, 2025, IATA announced on Monday( 8 June, 2024). 
• About 330 airlines, comprising more than 80 per cent of global air traffic, are members of IATA.
