April 28th is marked as the World Day for Safety and Health at Work annually to encourage the balance of safe, healthy, and appropriate working environments worldwide.

• This day is observed on the same date as the adoption of the Occupational Safety and Health Convention by the ILO, which occurred on April 28, 1971.
• In 2003, the International Labour Organization (ILO) designated the World Day for Safety and Health at Work as an annual global initiative to increase awareness about the significance of safety and health in the workplace. 

Shakira has been named Billboard's first Mujeres Latinas en la Música "Latin Woman of the Year," . The Colombian superstar singer will accept the award at the "Mujeres Latinas en la Música" — or "Latin Women in Music" — celebration that will air exclusively on Spanish-language TV channel Telemundo on May 7.

• Her song "Sessions" currently holds the record for most-streamed Latin track in 24 hours in Spotify history, and the record for the most-viewed Latin track on YouTube in 24 hours with over 63 million views.
• It broke 14 Guinness World Records, according to the magazine. The superstar has sold more than 95 million records globally, making her one of the best-selling musicians of all time. 

The business tycoon, Ratan Tata, a name that is also known for philanthropy and humanity has been conferred with Australia’s highest civilian honour.  

• Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Barry O’Farrell announced the news on his official Twitter account while conferring the Tata Sons’ Chairman Rata Tata with the honour.
• The Order of Australia (AO) award was presented for the industrialist's efforts in strengthening India-Australia relations. 
• Tata Group is India’s multinational conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai and is known to Indians for generations. The name Tata itself is synonymous with the Indian industry.
• This company is also known and recognised worldwide. It has not merely reformulated many of the business principles but has also turned them upside down. 

Uttarakhand’s Minister for Transport and Social Welfare Chandan Ram Das died of a heart attack on Wednesday(26-4-2023) in Bageshwar, a senior official said.

• The 65-year-old was brought to the district hospital this afternoon after he complained of suffocation in the chest, Bageshwar’s Chief Medical Officer DP Joshi said.
• The BJP leader represented Bageshwar in four consecutive assemblies since 2007, but he became a minister for the first time in Pushkar Singh Dhami’s cabinet.
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to the late minister and said he made a noteworthy contribution to the development of Uttarakhand. “Pained by the passing away of Minister in the Uttarakhand Government, Shri Chandan Ram Dass Ji.

• Janakpur Dham Cultural Festival was inaugurated by the Governor of Madhesh Pradesh Shree Hari Mishra to celebrate the shared Mithila Cultural heritage between India and Nepal on the eve of Janki Navami.
• The Embassy of India has organized the Mithila food festival in the daytime, offering a unique opportunity to sample a wide variety of cuisines of Mithila cultures. 

Dubai-based airline Emirates has unveiled its latest innovation, the world's first robotic check-in assistant named Sara. The system is part of a new City Check-in and Travel Store that is set to launch in Dubai's financial district.

• Sara will match customers' faces with scanned passports, check passengers in, and guide them to the luggage drop area.
• The facility, which opened on Thursday, April 27, allows customers to drop their luggage as early as 24 hours and up to 4 hours before their flight, arriving at the airport at their leisure.
• Passengers can check in via self-check-in kiosks, at dedicated desks with Emirates agents, or with the help of Sara.
• The robot is equipped with facial recognition technology and can print boarding passes, making the check-in process more efficient. Sara is also portable and can move around to assist those who need help.
• Sources suggest that future iterations of Sara will also have arms that can transport luggage.

NASA scientists at Johnson Space Center in Houston have successfully extracted oxygen from simulated lunar soil in a vacuum environment, which could pave the way for establishing a long-term presence of humans on the lunar surface, and even for the future colonization of the Moon.

• The ability to extract oxygen from lunar soil is not only crucial for providing breathable air for astronauts on the moon but can also be used as propellant for transportation and venture further space exploration.
• Aaron Paz, NASA senior scientist at Johnson Space Center, said this technology has the potential to produce several times its own weight in oxygen per year on the lunar surface, which will enable a sustained human presence and lunar economy.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao will be formally inaugurating the newly constructed Dr. B R Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat in Hyderabad April 30, constructed at a cost of over 600 crore rupees. 

• All the departments will start functioning from the new premises tomorrow onwards. With just a day left for the inauguration of the new building, the authorities are racing against time to make all the necessary arrangements for the inauguration ceremony.
• State Chief Secretary A Santhi Kumari instructed all the department officials to shift their offices from the current BRK Bhavan to the allotted floors in the new Secretariat. About three departments are being accommodated on each floor.

A two day maiden ‘Sinthan Festival’ was inaugurated today at Sinthan Maidan Kishtwar by the Department of Tourism, J&K in collaboration with District Administration Kishtwar, Indian Army and J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu to inaugurate the 'NAMO Medical Education and Research Institute' located in Silvassa town.

• He visited the campus, spread over 14 acres earlier, and also interacted with the workers there, who were involved in the construction of the project. 
• The medical college has been developed under the ministry of health and spread over a sprawling, lush green campus of 14.48 acres built at a cost of ?203 crore, for which the foundation stone was laid in January 2019.
• Located in the capital town Silvassa, the campus features a medical college building, a 24x7 central library, residential quarters, hostels for students and interns, research labs, anatomy museum, a club house among others and has an annual intake capacity of 177 medical students.

International Jazz Day is an International Day declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation in 2011 “to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe.”

• It is celebrated annually on April 30.
• The brainchild of jazz pianist and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock, Jazz Day is chaired by Hancock along with the sitting UNESCO Director-General.
• The celebration is recognised on the calendars of both UNESCO and the United Nations.
• The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, an American NGO also chaired by Hancock, is the lead organizational partner for Jazz Day. The Institute coordinates activities in the UNESCO member states as well as the Global Host Celebration.
