World Tuna Day is observed every year on May 2. This day is established by the United Nations(UN) General Assembly to raise awareness about the importance of Tuna Day. The day was first observed in 2017.

• The main aim of this day was to preserve the tuna fish from crashing and is to spread awareness about the tuna fish regarding sustainable fishing practice and how they become an endangered practice due to the high demand for their meat. 
• Tuna is a species of food and are economically very important. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) celebrated Tuna day on May 2. It was first observed in the year 2016. Tuna is a large wild animal. 
• The population of Tuna fish has declined by more than 97 per cent due to overfishing and illegal fishing. The UN has announced May 2 as World Tuna Day to preserve Tuna from getting extinct. 
• Thailand is one of the largest Tuna producing countries across the world. 
• The Theme of World Tuna Day 2023 is ”The Global Tuna Industry: Trailblazing through Tough Times”. 

The Enforcement Directorate raided three premises of Byju Raveendran, the founder, and CEO of ed-tech startup BYJUs. ED took this action under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

• The raids were conducted at the premises of Byju Raveendran and his company Think and Learn Pvt Ltd.
• According to the agency, the officials seized incriminating documents and digital data during the searches.
• According to the probe agency, the company has received foreign direct investment (FDI) worth Rs 28,000 crore between 2011 and 2023. Apart from this, the company also sent money to different countries in the name of FDI.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, during his visit to the Maldives, handed over two Indian-made vessels to the Maldives National Defence Forces (MNDF) on Tuesday (May 2, 2023).

• The vessels included a Fast Patrol Vessel, which was commissioned as the MNDF Coast Guard ship Huravee, and a Landing Craft Assault ship. The Fast Patrol Vessel is capable of coastal and offshore surveillance at high speeds.
• Maldives' President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who handed over the national flag to be hoisted on board the offshore patrol vessel, and Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi were present at the ceremony held at the port area of the MNDF's Coast Guard ships in Hulhumale.

Mairaj Ahmad Khan and youth Ganemat Sekhon have brought laurels to India by winning the gold medal in the skeet mixed team event at the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup Shotgun being played in Egypt.

• With this, India got its first medal in the World Championship. The Indian pair defeated the Mexican pair of Luis Raul Gallardo Oliveros and Gabriela Rodríguez 6-0 in the match.
• Italy won the bronze through the pairing of two-time World Championship silver medalist Simona Scoschetti and Rio Olympic champion Gabriele Rossetti. Mairaj, who won his fifth ISSF medal, shot 74 out of 75 in the qualification round of 30 teams.

A UK-based well-known Sanskrit scholar, Dr M.N. Nandakumara has been conferred an honorary MBE by King Charles III for his services to Indian classical arts in Britain. Dr Nandakumara is the Executive Director of the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan Centre in London and hails from the Indian state of Karnataka. 

• He has been associated with the Bhavan for 46 years and has welcomed Charles, the then Prince of Wales, to the popular Indian cultural hub on numerous occasions. 
• The honorary award is conferred by the British monarch to foreign nationals for their contribution to public life. 

India's April gross GST revenues reached a record high of Rs.1,87,035 crore, a 12% increase from last year's highest tax tally of Rs. 1.67 lakh crore for the same month.

• Domestic GST revenues, including import of services, rose 16% YoY in April.
• Goods import figures were not revealed, but had increased 8% in March according to the Finance Ministry.In April, GST Compensation Cess collections reached a new record of Rs. 12,025 crore, including Rs. 900 crore from imports.
• This surpasses the previous high of Rs. 11,931 crore in February.Further, on April 20 taxpayers made a record-breaking GST contribution of Rs. 68,228 crore through 9.8 lakh transactions, according to the ministry. This was the highest ever single day GST collection.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) have developed a machine learning-based computational tool to detect malignant tumours in the brain and spinal cord. Called glioblastoma mutiform drivers (GBMDriver), the tool is available publicly online.

• Glioblastoma is a fast and aggressively growing tumour with limited therapeutic options and a survival rate of less than two years from the time of initial diagnosis. The GBMDriver was developed to identify mutations in glioblastoma and can be accessed at bit.ly/44ip6PZ
• M. Michael Gromiha, a professor in the Department of Biotechnology at the institute, and his team led the research.
• The team included two alumni from Ohio State University and the National Institute of Health, U.S. Their findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Briefings in Bioinformatics.
• The researchers said their tool could be applied to other diseases; serve as important criteria for disease prognosis; and be a valuable resource to identify mutation-specific drug targets to design therapeutic strategies.

The Central Government has blocked 14 mobile messenger applications after it found that the apps were being used by terror groups in Jammu and Kashmir.

• It is reported that terrorists used these mobile messenger apps to spread the message and receive messages from Pakistan.
• The step was taken on the recommendation of defence forces, security, intelligence and investigation agencies.
• Multiple agencies found that these apps were being used by terrorists in Kashmir to communicate with their supporters and on-ground workers (OGW).
• These apps have been blocked under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.  
• The messenger applications that have been banned include Crypvisor, Enigma, SafeSwiss, Vikrame, Mediafire, Briar, Beechat, Nandbox, Conion, IMO, Elementor, Second Line, Jangi and Threema.

Award-winning British-Indian playwright and actor Meera Syal will be presented with a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) fellowship, the highest accolade bestowed upon an individual in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television.

• Syal, who starred in hit BBC comedies, 'Goodness Gracious Me' and 'The Kumars at No 42', will be honoured at the BAFTA Television Awards, which will take place on May 14 at the Royal Festival Hall. 
• As part of the fellowship, she will work directly with the arts charity over the coming year to inspire and nurture aspiring creatives through BAFTA's year-round learning, inclusion and talent programmes.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions declined in volume as well as value terms in April 2023 after peaking in the previous month.

• Transaction volumes declined 7.96 per cent month-on-month (m-o-m) in April 2023 to 796.29 crore against 865.16 crore in March 2023, per the National Payments Corporation of India’s “UPI Monthly Product Statistics”. 
• Transaction value declined 9.51 per cent m-o-m in April 2023 to Rs. 12.71 lakh crore against Rs. 14.04 lakh crore in March 2023.

Justice TS Sivagnanam, the acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court by notification of the Central Government .

• Justice Sivagnanam completed his B.Sc. from Loyola College, Chennai and LL.B.(H) degree from Madras Law College.
• He served as a junior to R. Gandhi, Senior Advocate. Later in his career, he was appointed as the Additional Government Standing Counsel for the Union of India in 2000, as Southern Railway Counsel in 2003, Sr. Panel Counsel, Union of India in 2004, AICTE Panel Counsel for 2005 and Counsel for the Registrar Generals, Officer and Judicial Office on appointment by the then Chief Justice of Madras High Court.
• He also appeared for the Department of Revenue, for the Customs and so on. He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court in 2009 and transferred as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court only in 2021. He shall retire in 2025 from his office.

Maria Stepanova, an author of Russian-Jewish descent, has been honoured with the prestigious Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding in the year 2023.

• Stepanova was recognised in Leipzig this week for her poetry collection titled Girls Without Clothes.
• The volume of poetry is characterised as a perceptive and exceptionally poetic exploration of the frequently veiled physical and emotional abuse that women face, along with the underlying power disparities that fuel this mistreatment.
• The Leipzig Book Award for European Understanding is one of the most prestigious literature prizes in Germany. It has been awarded annually since 1994 and comes with prize money of 20,000 euros. 

Commander Abhilash Tomy (retd.) created history as the first Indian to complete the Golden Globe Race on April 29, finishing in second place after a gruelling 236 days alone at sea in his sail boat named Bayanat.

• South African sailor Kirsten Neuschafer also scripted her name into maritime history, becoming the first woman to win the Golden Globe Race (GGR), a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe without using any modern technological aids, recreating the 1960s on the high seas.
• Abhilash Tomy / Bayanat crossed the finish line at 0446 UTC, finished his 2nd time solo non stop around the world journey, he at 2nd in GGR2022.
