World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), celebrated annually on 10 September, is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO).The overall goal of this day is to raise awareness about suicide prevention worldwide. Objectives include promoting stakeholder collaboration and self-empowerment to address self-harm and suicide through preventative action.

• The event represents a global commitment to focus attention on suicide prevention.
• The theme of WSPD 2023, “Creating hope through action,” reflects the need for collective, action to address this urgent public health issue.
• All of us- family members, friends, co-workers, community members, educators, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, political officials, and governments- can take action to prevent suicide in the Region.

The Jahrkhand Cabinet approved a proposal wherein transgenders will be given a monthly social security pension of Rs 1,000 under Mukhyamantri Rajya Samajik Suraksha Pension Yojana.

• This new scheme of the Hemant Soren government is meant for transgender people under the social assistance scheme. 
• The government also decided to include them under backward class category and provide them the benefits.
• The scheme aims to provide social security and bring them into the mainstream of society. 
• The scheme is one among 35 agendas that were approved by the cabinet including doubling the compensation amount for security personnel who get injured during duty.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday( 9 September 2023) announced the launch of the Global Biofuels Alliance.

• A total of 19 countries and 12 international organizations have so far agreed to join the alliance, including both G20 members and non-member countries. India, Brazil and the US are the founding members of the alliance.
• The prime minister launched the alliance in the presence of the US President Joe Biden, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio da Silva, Argentinian President Alberto Angel Fernández, Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni, Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina among others.
• Apart from India, Brazil and the US, the other G20 member countries supporting the initiative are Argentina, Canada, Italy, and South Africa. Bangladesh, Singapore, Mauritius, and the UAE are the G20 invitee countries.

Novak Djokovic defeated Daniil Medvedev in straight sets on Sunday to win his fourth US Open and a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title.

• The 36-year-old Djokovic won 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 to become the oldest men’s champion in New York in the Open Era and matched Margaret Court’s all-time mark for most Grand Slam victories.
• The Serbian is the first man to win three Grand Slam events in the same season four times, crowning his impending return to world No 1 in the most fitting of ways inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.
• The victory added to his wins at the Australian and French Opens earlier this year, with the only blemish his five-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the final of Wimbledon in July.

RBI plans to discontinue I-CRR in a phased manner to manage system liquidity without disrupting the money markets. On September 9, it will release 25 per cent of I-CRR, another 25 per cent on September 23, 2023, and the remaining 50 per cent on October 7, 2023.

What is I-CRR

The inception of the Incremental Cash Reserve Ratio (I-CRR) in 2016 was a transient strategic measure employed by the RBI to absorb the excessive liquidity coursing through the banking system. It is an additional cash balance which the RBI can ask banks to maintain over and above the CRR - for a specific period.

American space agency NASA announced that its oxygen-generating experiment that accompanied the Perseverance rover has successfully completed its mission and generated oxygen on the Red Planet.

1. Developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a microwave-oven-sized device called MOXIE (Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilisation Experiment), has generated oxygen for the 16th and final time aboard the Perseverance rover, NASA said in its blog. 
2. MOXIE has been generating oxygen aboard the Perseverance rover since its landing in 2021.
3. It has exceeded expectations by producing a total of 122 grams of oxygen, which is twice as much as NASA's original goals for the instrument.
4. The oxygen produced is of 98% purity or better, making it suitable for both fuel and breathing purposes, the space agency said.

Indian badminton player Kiran George clinched the men’s singles title at the Indonesia Masters 2023 in Medan, North Sumatra on Sunday(10 September 2023)

• Playing at the GOR PBSI Pancing court, Kiran George, 50th in the badminton rankings, beat world No. 82 Koo Takahashi of Japan 21-19, 22-20 in 56 minutes to claim his second BWF World Tour Super 100 badminton title. Kiran George won the Odisha Open last year, beating compatriot Priyanshu Rawat in the final.
• In the Indonesia Masters final, Kiran George and Koo Takahashi matched each other’s intensity in the first game. However, after the scores were tied at 15-all, Kiran George won six of the next 10 points to take a 1-0 lead.
• The second game also got off to a similar start. The 23-year-old Indian shuttler amped up his game after the scores were level at 6-all to take a five-point lead at 16-11.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has announced plans to construct the world's highest fighter airfield in the Nyoma region of Ladakh. The project is set to commence with the laying of the foundation stone by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on September 12, starting from Devak Bridge. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will lay the foundation stone of this project at Devak Bridge in Jammu on September 12, 2023.

• The construction of the world's highest fighter airfield in Nyoma, Ladakh, marks a significant milestone in India's infrastructure development, reflecting the nation's determination to fortify its strategic presence along its northern borders.
• Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry, the Chief of the Border Roads Organisation, had earlier expressed confidence that India would surpass China in the coming two to three years in terms of infrastructure development along the 3,488-kilometer stretch of the Line of Actual Control. 
• The Border Roads Organisation has completed a remarkable 295 projects valued at Rs 11,000 crore. These projects play a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity, accessibility, and defense preparedness in the border regions, reinforcing India's commitment to bolstering its national security.

Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards for 2022 were announced on September 11, honouring 12 young scientists with India's top science prize, after an year's delay.

The Bhatnagar Prizes, named after Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, the first Director-General of CSIR, are awarded annually in seven scientific disciplines: biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, medicine, engineering, and earth, atmosphere, ocean, and planetary sciences. These awards recognise exceptional researchers under the age of 45 and come with a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh.

• The 2023 celebrations focused on escalating Himalayan disasters through songs, discussions, and debates.
• 9th September was officially declared as Himalaya Day by the then chief minister of Uttarakhand, Harish Rawat, in 2014.
• The idea was conceptualized by Anil Joshi of the Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organization and other Indian environmentalists.

Indian archer Prathamesh Jawkar narrowly missed out on a top spot on the podium in the men’s compound event and settled for a silver after going down to Mathias Fullerton of Denmark in the gold medal match at the Archery World Cup Final 2023.

• In the dramatic shoot-off that followed, both archers showcased their incredible skills by hitting a perfect 10. However, it was Fullerton, who emerged victorious, as his arrow was impeccably closer to the center of the target.
• Jawkar’s day began with a convincing 149-141 victory against world no.5 Italian Miguel Becerra in the quarterfinal. He then shot a perfect 150 against world No. 1 Mike Schloesser of the Netherlands to beat the second-seeded archer by a point to book his berth in the final.
• The Indian has made a big impression in his first season on the Hyundai Archery World Cup tour, winning gold at Shanghai Stage 2 having been seeded 33rd.

India on September 10 formally handed over the G-20 presidency to Brazil at the closing ceremony of the annual summit of the grouping.

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed the transition by handing over the ceremonial gavel of the presidency to Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. However, India will continue to hold the position until November 30.
• PM also proposed a “virtual summit” of the grouping at the end of November this year to assess the status of the suggestions and proposals put forth by members and determine “how their progress can be accelerated”.
• PM made a renewed push for expansion of the U.N. Security Council and reforms in all global institutions to reflect world’s “new realities”, as the G20 summit drew to a close with the U.S., Russia and France praising the meeting outcomes under Indian presidency.
• Earlier in the day, G-20 leaders visited Rajghat where they paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. Modi welcomed the dignitaries with an ‘angvastram’ or stole.
• India’s G-20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said that it took over 200 hours of non-stop negotiations by a team of Indian diplomats to deliver a consensus on the G-20 declaration that was adopted at the Leaders’ Summit.
