    Minerals of Punjab

    What is Mineral?

In geology, mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic substance (see inorganic molecules) with a definite chemical composition and a regular internal structure.

    • Punjab soils are relatively young and most of the minerals present in these soils are inherited from the Himalayan Rocks. Most of the minerals in the world are associated with igneous and metamorphic rocks.
    • But the Geological composition of Punjab is primarily from sediments brought down and deposited by rivers.
    • Sedimentary rocks comprise sand, gravels, silt, clay and pebbles etc. Thus there is a virtual absence of minerals in Punjab.
    • The minerals of Punjab are sand, gravels and sandstone which are primarily found in the districts of Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Jalandhar, Ferozpur and Fazilka districts.
