    Wetlands of Punjab

    Introduction-

    • Punjab has 12 natural wetlands and 9 manmade wetlands. 
    • Harike, Kanjli and Ropar 3 wetlands -- International significance under Ramsar Convention. 
    • Ranjit Sagar and Nangal Lake-- National Wetlands. 

    The Punjab wetlands can be categorized into following types according to their importance
    A. Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Sites)
    B. Wetlands of National Importance
    C. State Wetlands
    D. Other Identified Wetlands

    Conservation Reserve in Punjab-

    • The area declared by the State Governments in any area owned by the Government, particularly the areas adjacent to National Parks and Sanctuaries and those areas which link one Protected Area with another.  
    • Such declaration should be made after having consultations with the local communities. 
    • Rights of people living inside a Conservation Reserve are not affected 
    • Rakh sarai Amanat Khan Conservation Reserve- Tarn Taran (notified in 2010)

    Community Reserves in Punjab-

    • The area declared by the State Government in any private or community land, not comprised within a National Park, Sanctuary or a Conservation Reserve, where an individual or a community has volunteered to conserve wildlife and its habitat. 
    • Rights of people living inside a Community Reserve are not affected.

    The first ever notified in this country in 2007

    1. Keshopur- Chamb Community- Gurdaspur District
    2. Lalwan Community reserve- Hoshiarpur District 
    Wildlife Sanctuaries in Punjab
    Under the Ramsar international wetland conservation treaty, wetlands are defined as follows:
    1) Harike-e-Pattan Wildlife Sanctuary- Tarn Taran 
    2) Takhni- Rehmapur Sanctuary- Hoshiarpur 
    3) Abohar Wildlife Sanctuary- Abohar, Fazilka District (Black Buck)
    4) Bir Motibagh Sanctuary- Patiala
    5) Bir Gurdialpura Sanctuary- Patiala
    6) Bir Bhunerheri Sanctuary- Patiala
    7) Bir Mehas Wildlife Sanctuary- Nabha
    8) Bir Dosanjh Wildlife Sanctuary- Nabha 
    9) Bir Bhadson Wildlife Sanctuary- Nabha- Bhadson- Gobindgarh road
    10) Bir Ashwin Wildlife Sanctuary- Sangrur
    11) Jhajjar- Bachauli Wildlife Sanctuary- Rupnagar 
    12) Kathlaur Kushlian Wildlife Sanctuary- Pathankot 
    13) Nangal Wildlife Sanctuary- Ropar District (notified in 2009)
