India Launches 'Sagar Mein Samman' to Boost Women's Role in Maritime Sector

The Government of India launched the ‘Sagar Mein Samman’ initiative to enhance women’s participation in the maritime sector. Announced by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal during the International Day for Women in Maritime celebrations in Mumbai, the initiative aims to build a gender-equitable workforce across all levels of maritime operations---from docks to leadership roles. It aligns with the government’s broader commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the workplace.

Key Points:

  1. Strategic Objectives:
The SMS initiative focuses on promoting inclusivity, ensuring safety, and providing equal opportunities for women in the maritime sector. It encompasses skill development, leadership training, and the dismantling of gender-based barriers within the profession.

  2. Significant Growth in Women Seafarers:
India has witnessed a substantial increase in women seafarers, from 341 in 2014 to 2,557 in 2024—a 649% rise. Approximately 2,989 women have received financial assistance during this period, reflecting the government's commitment to encouraging women's careers in maritime.

  3. Policy Framework and Implementation:
The SMS policy includes planning and strategy, training and development, research, governance, and community outreach. It also offers incentives for shipping companies to hire women and provides scholarships to support their training and development.

  4. Recognition of Women Leaders:
During the launch event, ten outstanding women from the maritime sector were honored for their contributions, highlighting the achievements of women in a traditionally male-dominated field.

  5. Future Goals:
The initiative sets an ambitious target of achieving 12% female representation in technical maritime roles by 2030, aligning with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The 'Sagar Mein Samman' initiative represents a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and equitable maritime industry in India, recognizing the vital role of women in driving innovation and sustainability in the sector.
