Nirmala Sitharaman Inaugurates Corporate Bhavan in Kolkata to Boost Corporate Governance

Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the newly constructed ‘Corporate Bhavan’ in New Town, Kolkata on May 1, 2025. The building is a consolidated hub for various arms of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, designed to provide streamlined and efficient services under one roof.

Key Highlights:

  • Corporate Bhavan will house major regulatory offices including the Regional Directorate (East), Registrar of Companies, Official Liquidator, Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) Kolkata Bench, and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI).
  • The building, developed at a cost of Rs.150.43 crore, covers 13,239 square metres and includes eco-friendly features like waste recycling systems, smart parking, and CO2 sensors for air quality management.
  • Sitharaman said the integrated facility will serve as a single-window interface for companies, startups, auditors, and insolvency professionals, thus reducing time and costs in corporate processes.
  • A special feature of the Bhavan is the country’s first Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) Facilitation Centre on its seventh floor. It will help youth aged 21–24 find internship opportunities and receive career guidance.
  • The centre, a joint initiative between the MCA and CII, will have a dedicated team to assist young applicants, particularly those not in full-time education or employment.
  • Sitharaman reiterated the government’s commitment to enabling ease of doing business, stating that corporate governance must be fair, enterprise-friendly, and rooted in trust.
