India is set to conduct its first comprehensive Household Income Survey in 2026, led by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

The survey, guided by an expert panel chaired by economist Dr. Surjit S. Bhalla, aims to provide reliable data on income distribution, technology’s impact on earnings, and to improve policymaking and welfare planning.

Key Highlights:

• MoSPI will carry out the first all-India Household Income Survey in 2026, filling a long-standing data gap in national income estimates.
• A Technical Expert Group (TEG) chaired by Dr. Surjit S. Bhalla has been formed to finalise methodology, sampling, and definitions, ensuring global best practices.
• Past attempts at income surveys between the 1950s–80s were abandoned due to data quality and reliability issues; the new approach will leverage technology for accuracy.
• The survey will include innovative modules to measure the impact of technology on household income and wage dynamics for the first time in India.
• Results from the survey are expected to guide targeted welfare schemes, assess income inequality, and support more inclusive economic planning post structural reforms.
