World Food Safety Day 2025

World Food Safety Day is observed annually on June 7 to raise awareness about the importance of food safety and to promote actions that prevent, detect, and manage foodborne risks.

The day highlights the critical role safe food plays in sustaining health, reducing foodborne illnesses, and contributing to global development.

India’s Initiatives on World Food Safety Day

On World Food Safety Day 2025, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda launched a nationwide campaign led by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) aimed at curbing obesity and promoting healthier food choices among the population.

The drive focuses on raising awareness about the importance of balanced diets, reducing the intake of high-calorie and processed foods, and encouraging physical activity as part of a holistic approach to food safety and public health.

The campaign includes outreach programs, collaboration with schools and communities, and engagement with food businesses to promote transparent labeling and responsible marketing practices. FSSAI continues to strengthen food safety regulations to protect consumers and ensure access to safe, nutritious, and wholesome food across the country.

Theme:

The theme for World Food Safety Day 2025 is “Food Safety: Science in Action,” underscoring the vital role of scientific research, innovation, and evidence-based policies in ensuring safe food. It highlights how science drives actions to prevent foodborne illnesses, protect public health, and strengthen food safety systems globally.

History:
World Food Safety Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2018 following a proposal by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The first-ever observance was held on June 7, 2019. The day aims to galvanize global attention and action to improve food safety management, policies, and practices worldwide.

Significance:

  • Foodborne illnesses affect millions globally every year, causing severe health consequences and economic losses.
  • Safe food practices protect public health by preventing diseases caused by contaminated food.
  • Promoting food safety is essential to achieve several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including zero hunger, good health, and economic growth.
  • Food safety enhances consumer confidence, strengthens food systems, and supports trade and economic development.
