Rajasthan State govt has renamed King Edward Memorial to Maharishi Dayanand Memorial Vishranti Grah (rest house).
This building, situated right in front of Ajmer railway station, was started being built in 1911 and completed in a year. The district administration runs a hotel and guest house here.
State Assembly Speaker and MLA from Ajmer North, Vasudev Devnani, had demanded the name change as, according to him, it reminded people of their earlier slavery to the British.
Cooperative department of Rajasthan released a notification, stating that King Edward Memorial building will now be called Maharishi Dayanand Memorial Vishranti Grah.
The reason for naming it after Maharishi Dayanand is that he spent his last days in Ajmer, and was cremated near Mukti Dham at Agra Gate.
