The Assam government decided to change the name of Karimganj district in the Barak Valley to Sribhumi, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

• The decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet, Sarma said at a press conference here.
• The Chief Minister explained that this renaming initiative aims to align with the local population's wishes and aspirations.
• He further clarified their ongoing policy, stating that they would continue modifying names lacking historical documentation or dictionary references, describing it as an established, continuous practice.
