PM Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyaan for tribal welfare

Context: Recently, the finance minister told the House that the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Unnat Gram Abhiyan will be launched to improve the socio-economic condition of tribal communities. States such as Jharkhand which has large population of tribals will be benefited from the scheme.  

  • Jharkhand has nearly 26 per cent of tribal population along with five ST reserved LS seats and 28 Assembly seats reserved for tribals.

PM - Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyaan

  • It is a “transformative scheme” that was recently announced by the Tribal Affairs Minister.

  • PM - Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyaan aims at achieving full saturation of basic facilities among 5 crore Scheduled Tribe families across 63,000 villages in tribal-majority areas and aspirational districts.

  • The scheme is designed after the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) to achieve saturation of basic facilities for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups.

  • The union government has allocated Rs 13,000 crore in the Budget Estimate (24-25) for the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.

  • The scheme will adopt saturation coverage for tribal families in tribal-dominated villages and aspiring districts. This will cover 63,000 villages benefiting 5 crore tribal people. 

  • This will benefit the tribal community of Jharkhand. 

  • Also as the scheme aims at improving infrastructural development in aspirational districts, Jharkhand will be benefited as  Jharkhand as nineteen aspirational districts.

Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) 

  • It aids to ensure last-mile welfare scheme delivery.

  • It will focus on 11 critical interventions through nine ministries, including the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.

  • It aids to ensure last-mile welfare scheme delivery.

  • The scheme is implemented during Financial Year 2023-24 to 2025-26.
