The discovery of the world’s deepest blue hole in Mexico’s Chetumal Bay has captivated the attention of geologists, marine biologists, and adventurers alike.

• This underwater sinkhole, known as the Taam Ja’ Blue Hole, plunges at least 1,380 feet (420 meters) below sea level, surpassing the previous record holder, the Dragon Hole in the South China Sea
• The Taam Ja’ Blue Hole, named after the Mayan phrase for “deep water,” was first discovered in 2003. 
• The mouth of the Taam Ja’ Blue Hole is nearly circular, with a major axis measuring 151.8 meters (498 feet), and its orientation is similar to the major faults in the area.
