Whale Shark :

Recently, fishers in Odisha rescued a whale shark.
Whale sharks are the largest shark, and indeed largest of any fi shes alive today and they travel large distances to fi nd enough food to sustain their huge size, and to reproduce.
The whale shark is a ‘ filter feeder shark’ which means it does not eat meat like other sharks. Whale sharks filter sea water and feed on tiny planktons.
The maximum size of whale sharks is not known, but could be as large as 20m.
Whale sharks are found in all the tropical oceans of the world.
The largest whale shark aggregation in India is along the Gujarat coats. On the Bay of Bengal coast, the only whale shark aggregation is in Andhra Pradesh.
Demand for their meat, finsand oil remains a threat to the species, particularly by unregulated fi sheries. They are victims of bycatch, the accidental capture of non-target species in fi shing gear. And whale shark tourism presents a threat to the species as it can interrupt their feeding and sharks can be injured by boat propellers.
