World Television Day 2023

World Television Day is observed globally on November 21 to highlight the crucial role of visual media and its growing influence on decision-making. The invention of television is credited to Scottish engineer John Logie Baird in 1924.

  • In 1996, the United Nations held the first World Television Forum, designating November 21 each year as World Television Day.
  • National telecast in India began in 1982, coinciding with the introduction of color television in the Indian market. At that time, the sole national channel was the government-owned Doordarshan.
  • The first and longest-running Indian television program, ‘Krishi Darshan,’ debuted in 1967, while iconic series like ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Mahabharata’ marked significant milestones. Other popular shows included ‘Hum Log,’ ‘Wagle Ki Duniya,’ and ‘Buniyaad.’
  • The advent of television revolutionized communication and information consumption.
