Once the Portuguese arrived in India in about 1500, a number of them wrote detailed accounts regarding Indian social customs and religious practices.

Among the best known of the Portuguese writers is Duarte Barbosa, who wrote a detailed account of trade and society in south India.
One of the most famous French jeweller Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, who travelled to India at least six times.
