International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation was observed on 6 February.

Highlights

  • The day seeks to raise awareness on ending the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM).
  • It is observed by United Nations (UN), since 2012.
  • Its observance highlights the systematic global efforts, which are required to end the practice of FGM.
  • The day also draw attention to that more efforts are needed to shape a world that respects women’s autonomy, integrity and well-being.

History of the Day

The FGM is in practice across the globe for thousands of years. But efforts to end this practice have intensified in recent decades.  United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) started the largest global programme to end FGM in 2008, in association with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). UN started observing the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation in 2012, for creating more awareness on the practice and increasing pressure on communities to stop it.

Theme of the Day

The international day of Zero Tolerance for FGM 2022 was observed under the theme “Accelerating Investment to End Female Genital Mutilation.” The theme has been chosen because several countries are experiencing increased cases of FGM amid COVID-19 pandemic.
