Indian Navy signs contract with BEL to supply Anti-Drone System

The Indian Navy signed a contract with the Bharat Limited (BEL) for the supply of the first indigenous comprehensive Naval Anti Drone System (NADS).

  • The NADS comprises of both ‘hard kill’ and ‘soft kill’ capabilities.
  • Contract was signed in the presence of representatives from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and senior Naval officers in New Delhi on August 31, 2021.
  • Indian Navy has also provided consistent support and led in the joint development of anti-drone system with DRDO and BEL.
About Naval Anti Drone System (NADS)

The NADS has been developed by DRDO and manufactured by BEL. It is the first indigenously developed anti-drone system that will be inducted into the Indian Armed Forces.

Who Manufactured the system?
  • This completely indigenous system was made by multiple units of BEL in Bangaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Machilipatanam together.
  • BEL units worked in collaboration with DRDO Labs and the Indian.
  • Labs like Electronics & Radar Development Establishment, Defence Electronics Research Laboratory, Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences and Instruments Research & Development Establishment were part of the making of NADS.
Features of NADS

NADS has the capability to detect and jam micro drones. It uses a laser-based kill mechanism in order to terminate targets. It will act as an effective all-encompassing counter the increased drone threat to strategic naval installations. It uses help of radar, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors and radio frequency (RF) detectors in order to detect and jam micro drones.

Use of the NADS

This anti-drone system was first deployed to provide security cover for Republic Day Parade in 2021 as well as during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address from Red Fort. It was also deployed in Ahmedabad for the Modi-Trump roadshow.The Indian Navy signed a contract with the Bharat Limited (BEL) for the supply of the first indigenous comprehensive Naval Anti Drone System (NADS).
